Joe Wilson war Pipe Major (PM) bei den Gordon Highlanders. Er hatte Unterricht bei dem berühmten Komponisten Pipe Major Donald MacLeod und bei Pipe Major James Robertson, welcher von G. S. McLennan lernte. Nach seiner Zeit bei der Army war Joe Wilson von 1967 bis 1994 bei der City of Glasgow Police. Im Jahr 2000 wurde er Senior Instructor am College of Piping in Glasgow, inzwischen The National Piping Centre, Otago Street genannt, und er behielt diesen Posten für zehn Jahre bis zu seiner Erkrankung. Es war ein besonderes Erlebnis, als wir 2008 beide einen Preis in den SPA Composing Commissions erhielten, Joe für einen seiner Märsche und ich für einen Piobaireachd.
Ich hatte seit 2007 mindestens einmal im Jahr Unterricht am College bei Joe und später auch per Webcam bis er krank wurde. Als ich von seinem Tod erfuhr, schrieb ich ihm am selben Abend dieses Piobaireachd Lament. Ich möchte es mit anderen Pipern teilen, da ich finde, es sollte gespielt werden und nicht in einer Schublade ruhen. Eine Aufnahme des vollständigen Laments, gespielt auf der Highlandipe, wird hier später noch hinzugefügt.

Joe Wilson was a Pipe Major of the Gordon Highlanders. He received tuition from the famous composer Pipe Major Donald MacLeod and Pipe Major James Robertson, who himself was taught by G. S. McLennan. After his time in the Army he joined the City of Glasgow Police from 1967 till 1994. It was in 2000 when he became the senior instructor at the College of Piping, now The National Piping Centre, Otago Street and he held that position for ten years until he turned ill. He finished his own tune collection “A Collection of Mainly Traditional Music for the Bagpipe” just before he died.
Pipe Major Joe Wilson was my first teacher at the College of Piping. He was not only a great piper, composer and outstanding teacher but also a true gentleman. I can well remember the way he came into the College in the morning with a smile on his face, obviously looking forward to teach for another day. I always had the feeling that he enjoyed teaching very much and a Joe Wilson hour often lasted about 90 minutes. It was a special occasion when we both received prizes in the SPA Composing Commissions in 2008, Joe for one of his marches and myself for a piobaireachd.
I had lessons with Joe at the College at least once a year from 2007 onwards and later also via webcam until he turned ill.
